PetStay Cornwall & Plymouth Branch

Hi, I’m Nicola and I’m delighted to be running PetStay – Cornwall & Plymouth.

I currently own a Springer Spaniel with an energy level most can only admire and will be your best friend if you can throw a tennis ball until it gets dark! Having lived with various breeds of dogs for most of my life I can appreciate that no two are the same, and having peace of mind that your dog is being cared for in the best way suited to its needs is the top priority while you are away.

With PetStay every dog is matched very carefully with its carer to ensure it has the very best holiday! Only dogs from your household will stay with your chosen carer at any one time. You and your dog will meet your carer at their home before making any commitment to book – this provides a great opportunity for your dog to become familiar with its new holiday home and for you to discuss the important things like dietary and exercise requirements. Whether you’re away for a weekend or taking a longer break you can rest assured PetStay offers a home-from-home experience with regular updates and photos being provided if you wish. All carers have a true passion for dogs, are insured and thoroughly checked to ensure the guidelines set by DEFRA and the local authority are being met.

If you’d like further information or you are ready to book, please contact me on either phone number or email address below. If you are booking for the first time, I’ll ask lots of questions about your dog to find out more about its character. This is to ensure it is matched with the most suitable carer.

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

What are the requirements of becoming a carer?

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

How are your carers vetted?

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

How many dogs can I look after?

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

Do I have to provide the food?

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

What about walking the dogs?

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.

What if the dog becomes ill?

We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.

Will I be paid?

You will receive a daily allowance starting from £13 per day.

What happens next?

If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

Our Reviews

“Martin and Debbie cared for my two dogs for a couple of nights. One of the dogs has had a difficult past, and hence is rather nervous, but he settled into their home easily, and was very happy there. Both dogs were well-cared for and happy upon my return. Martin sent me a picture whilst I was away, which is always re-assuring! Hope to use this service in the future. Very pleased to have found someone local whom I know will look after my two very well indeed!”

Jasper

This was Jasper’s first time away from us and we were a bit apprehensive. We needn’t have been. Margaret and Alan looked after him very well and he had a great time. They were sensitive to the fact that he didn’t like nearby crop scarers and they tailored his walks accordingly. The whole booking process was excellent too. We would thoroughly recommend PetStay and hope to use the service again.

Pickles

Jan and Les and Prima welcomed our Pickles, and us too, with open arms. Very friendly and helpful, We did “trial runs” beforehand and then Pickles went to stay for a week. Jan kindly sent us photos of Pickles chillaxing on the garden furniture and when we returned to collect him it was clear to us that he had been a very happy relaxed boy. He is an old dog and its important to me that life is as stress free as it can be now. Jan seems very laid back and gentle with him. He gets lots of walks. These are very nice people and we would not hesitate to use them again, and to recommend them. Thanks Jan you are a star.

Meet the Carers

Jan and her dog Prima

Hi, my name is Jan. I live in Cornwall with my partner Les and our dog Prima, who is a long-term foster from the Cinnamon Trust. She is one laid back pooch who enjoys welcoming our guests.

I have a large, secure garden and there are plenty of lovely woodland and beach walks near to us, the length of which can be adapted to each dog’s ability. We usually join a local dog walking group once or twice a week; just let us know if you would rather your dog was not walked with a group as this can also be flexible. Dogs are fed with their own food and I can administer any medications required.

I have had dogs all my life and couldn’t imagine living without them. I was involved in GSD training for several years and I am a volunteer walker for the Cinnamon Trust. I have also fostered dogs for the Refuge4Pets organisation which I very much enjoy. What I love most about being a PetStay carer is meeting the different owners and their pets.

I look forward to welcoming you and your companion into our home.
