PetStay Durham & Darlington Branch

Hello I’m Emma and this is Bailey, our lively, loving, naughty chocolate Labrador! I am the proud owner of the Durham and Darlington branch of PetStay.

I live in County Durham with my two children, Sophie and Jake. Bailey the Labrador joined our family 18 months ago and has brought so much love, laughter and of course mischief to our lives. (Her favourite game is to hide our shoes in the garden!)

As PetStay’s 42nd branch, I cover a number of postcodes in the County Durham and Darlington area including DH1 to DH9, DH97 to DH99, DL1 to DL5, and DL13 to DL17. If you are looking for a dog sitter in Shildon or want to become a PetStay carer in Bishop Auckland I would love to hear from you. I look forward to providing you with the perfect holiday home for your dog, allowing you the best stress-free holiday.

Why Choose Us?

We all love our holidays however leaving our dogs behind is never an easy decision to make. Like Bailey, most dogs would much prefer to stay in a loving home rather than a kennel. Here at Petstay Durham & Darlington, my team of carefully selected carers will ensure that your dog has the best care, tailored to its needs, ensuring a happy stay and peace of mind for you while you are away.

I am passionate about the carers I select to work with us; they are all fully licensed and insured, as well as home checked by me, so I know we only have the best. Dogs from other households are never mixed and you can choose to board your dog alone or they love doggie playtime, with a carer who has a friendly dog.

How It Works

Before matching your dog or dogs with one of my carers, I will find out as much as possible about your dog and their character, what daily routines you have, where they sleep, their likes and dislikes and well as any other special requirements they may have. This help me find the perfect carer for you and your dog, and we can then arrange for you both to meet and see where your dog will be staying. If everyone is happy, I will guide you through the booking process and give you a list of holiday essentials to pack for your dog’s stay.

Become a carer

If you’re interested in becoming one of my carers I’d love to hear from you. Being a genuine dog lover, having a secure garden, being at home during the day and no children under the age of 7 are the main criteria. You might be retired, semi-retired, working from home, so you are able to spend lots of time giving doggie cuddles. You could become part of our PetStay family by caring for someone else’s dog in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

What are the requirements of becoming a carer?

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

How are your carers vetted?

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

How many dogs can I look after?

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

Do I have to provide the food?

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

What about walking the dogs?

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.

What if the dog becomes ill?

We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.

How am I paid?

You will receive a daily allowance starting from £13 per day.

What happens next?

If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

Lisa with guest dog, Roxy

“Hi my name is Lisa. I am a carer with PetStay.

I live in a bungalow with a large garden in a quiet village. There are some great walks nearby. I work from home where I live with my husband Adam, with no children or other dogs. I have always loved animals, especially dogs.

I come from a family of dog lovers and I have been around dogs all of my life. I love having a dog in the house and enjoy long walks with them and trips to the beach.”

“Hi, my name is Gill and I’m a carer with PetStay.

I live with my husband Trevor in a terraced house with an enclosed front garden and rear yard, on the outskirts of town, just a few miles from Durham. There are several great dog-walking areas close to my home and it’s just a short walk to our nearest woods.

Our grown-up son has long since left home and we currently have no pets of our own. I have always loved dogs and we had at least one while we were growing up (as well as a menagerie of other animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, hens, birds and fish!).

Our own Labrador, Bonnie, was with us from age 4.5 weeks until she sadly passed away at age 14 and I really miss having a dog around. I work from home and enjoy having pets come to stay – they are such good company and I love spending time with them and getting out into the fresh air at least a couple of times a day.”

Snoopy stayed with Emma for the first time while we were on holiday in Italy two weeks ago. She had a marvellous time, with lots of walks, a trip to the beach and was obviously treated as a member of the family, with lots of cuddles! Emma sent regular updates and photos of her stay, which was very reassuring. Snoopy settled very quickly with Emma who has a lovely kind and calm manner. Snoopy loved Emma’s children also and was rather reluctant to leave when I went to pick her up !! I would have no reservations in asking Emma to look after Snoopy again or in recommending Emma to anyone else looking for care for their dog. Definitely five star service.

November 2018

It was reassuring to meet the carer prior to placement of our pet.
Straight off you could sense the empathy the carer had for the animal and to see where our pet was to live and play.
I would definitely recommend Petstay to any prospective owner needing to leave their pet in a secure and loving environment for any length of time.

October 2018

Brilliant! Pet Stay Carefully picked a carer that was suited to my Weimaraner and we had a no obligation meeting before booking. My dog had a fantastic stay, made himself really at home and we were sent pictures every evening. He came home in great condition so we will definitely be using Pet Stay again.
