Hi, we are Jacqui and Martyn of PetStay Reading, with Max our Airedale. Max is now 8 years old but is still as bouncy as ever and is a much loved member of our family. We have looked after dogs for many years and want only the best for him. It was whilst looking for a place for him to stay when we went on holiday that we found out about PetStay.

Kennels can be quite traumatic for a family dog, used to lots of love and attention and we have had difficulties in the past with boarding Max, who was really isolated and unhappy in kennels among many unfamiliar dogs with a totally different routine.

PetStay, where your family pet gets to stay in the home of an approved carer who looks after them whilst you are away is a fantastic solution, providing the care, fuss and personal attention of being at home.

How it works

We have a team of handpicked and insured carers, who are fully checked and must meet very high criteria and safety standards set by us and the local council. Carers must be genuine, experienced dog lovers who will treat your beloved pet dog like their own.

We will match your dog to an appropriate carer based on where you live and the needs of your own pet. A carer is exclusive to you for the duration of your booking, up to three dogs from one household can stay at any one time.

We will arrange for you and your dog to meet your carer in their home so you can talk through your dog’s routine, discussing for example where they sleep, how many walks they have each day and food and treats. This visit means your dog will be familiar with the carers, their home surroundings and provides you with complete peace of mind. We organise your booking after meeting the carer and once you are completely happy.

Here are the few simple stages of booking with PetStay.

1st: Ring or email your local branch to discuss your dogs requirements and dates.
2nd: We will explain all about PetStay and what your next steps would be.
3rd: We then take all details about your dog and then match them to the most suitable carer.
4th: A meeting will be organised for you and your dog to meet the carer.
5th: If you are 100% happy with your carer you would then be ready to book with PetStay.
6th: No later than 5 days after your initial meeting, complete our on-line booking form and pay the arrangement fee.
7th: An email confirmation will be sent to you.
8th: You’re all booked in and don’t have to worry about anything.
9th: Drop your dog off at the carer’s house with food, a bed. toys and anything else you think they might need.
10th: Go away with complete peace of mind and have a wonderful holiday.


*PetStay Arrangement Fee

Our daily rate is made up of the Arrangement Fee and the Carer’s Allowance.  These are 2 separate payments.  The Arrangement Fee is a payment to arrange and confirm the booking of your dog’s stay, and is due for payment within 5 days of meeting your dog carer.  For a repeat booking the Arrangement Fee is payable within 5 days of your requested dates being confirmed by PetStay.

The Arrangement Fee is non-refundable or non- transferable

The Arrangement Fee is for the service provided by your local PetStay branch in selecting a suitably matched dog carer for you and your dog.  The Arrangement Fee also represents a proportion of all the administration and ongoing business costs, including but not limited to, Public Liability and Employer Liability insurance, licensing, recruitment of carers, advertising, 24/7 support to carers, and business documentation giving you peace of mind and your dog a quality home dog boarding experience with PetStay.

The Dog Carer’s Allowance

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

What are the requirements of becoming a carer?

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

How are your carers vetted?

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

How many dogs can I look after?

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

Do I have to provide the food?

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

What about walking the dogs?

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.

What if the dog becomes ill?

We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.

Will I be paid?

You will receive a daily allowance starting from £15 per day.

I first came across Lynette and Pet Stay when I found her online. I had previously done something similar and really wasn’t happy when I used the service as it felt too much like a money making scheme, and much less like a service where someone who loves animals is paid to look after yours as you would like them to be looked after. So I had pretty much given up on the idea, but was really concerned as I do need to go away with work from time to time.
From the minute I saw Lynette’s photo on the website of her cuddling a gorgeous golden retriever, I knew that this was the type of company that I had been searching for. I contacted her and explained that I had a very large, very bouncy labradoodle and could I meet some of her pet carers. Lynette is friendly, helpful and incredibly accommodating. She immediately sent me a list of some carers, suitable for Dolly Doodle, and suggested I picked a couple out so I could go and meet them, with Dolly….and see what we all thought. That was nearly a year ago, and Pet Stay and Lynette are like my right hand (or should that be ‘paw’) for when I go away. In fact I plan around their availability. I met two sets of amazing carers, and so far have used….and stayed using….Jean. She is a true diamond. On our interview in Jean’s garden, Dolly’s collar got attached to a garden pot sculpture and Dolly panicked and tore across the beautiful green lawn upending the mud everywhere and causing chaos, the type of chaos only previously seen on Marley and Me. I held my breath…and Jean laughed, and wasn’t at all put off!! I didn’t know people like this existed!! And oddly, Dolly is pretty much a model pup in her company – and I get told off for calling her a yobbo It’s absolutely perfect. I have found someone who loves Dolly for who she is, doesn’t judge, and as a result is a fantastic influence on Dolly. Dolly behaves well with Jean, or so she tells me, which leads me to believe that Dolly is very clever as she wants to be invited back. Being matched so well with the amazing Jean, also means that you have a really positive experience as the carer already knows what your dog is like…and not only accepts it, but embraces it! It means that pick up time is not about telling me that Dolly was naughty, but just a lovely chat about what great times they have had together. And what great times indeed! Dolly now views Jean as her second home…..possibly even prefers it to her actual home! She totally adores Jean with endless loyalty, as do I, and Jean is in turn so positive about Dolly, and really resilient with Dolly’s rather exuberant greetings. Jean takes everything in her stride. She pops socks on Dolly so that her punching paws on greeting people in her home get softened somewhat….and she just thinks she is a lovely character, and I am so grateful for that. I get sent lovely update texts about their fantastic walks and the lovely companionship they are enjoying when they are together. Dolly enjoys their long walks by the canal, she accompanies her to family barbeques, out to see her friends, helps her in the garden, she enjoys meeting her grandchildren….and watching Strictly Come Dancing together by the fire. When I drop her off next week, I know she is accompanying Jean to the hairdressers on a day out which they are going on together. Dolly may possibly decide to have her hair done as well….she fancies a perm. I have been able to do so much more work trips this December as a result of this incredible care, and can be more flexible with my free time, as it is such a relief to know that Dolly is so happy with Jean, and as much as possible I try and book my calendar around her availability. If Dolly could, she would drive herself over to Jean’s and book herself in for a long weekend of quality time. Dolly is just happy to be wherever Jean is. In fact, my next suggestion to Lynette is that she offers a similar service for the humans too…..so we can go and have some overnights stays away, on a par with the level of care that Dolly gets! Lynette runs a fantastic service, and she has some truly wonderful carers on her books, all chosen by Lynette, a fellow dog owner who totally understands what it is we are looking for. On our initial meetings we also met and really loved Dave and Trina. Dolly and I have a big, big soft spot for Jean. When I pick Dolly up from Jean’s following her Pet Stay, I always feel like I am breaking up the party and Dolly comes home with a bit of a cross face that her holiday is over. Which sounds odd, but it is just what you want when you really want your pet to be happy on their stay. Jean and I stay in touch when Dolly isn’t there also, as it is a really lovely bond they have. What other business would offer such service? Use it or lose it – it’s an incredible service…..and long may it continue. Many thanks to Lynette for offering a service that feels like you have a supportive extended family that truly loves the pets they are caring for. Thank you.

With our wedding day planned, our focus was on our dog, Roxy. She has never been kennelled and always stays with my parents when we go away, however, everyone we trusted with Roxy was going to be at our wedding so we had to decide what to do with her. Roxy is 11 and a little set in her ways but I did not hesitate in contacting Lynette at Petstay. I have known Lynette since school so turned to her for help. What can I say other than Lynette found the perfect carers for Roxy, she was loved and cared for as she is at home and that was evident when we arrived to pick her up. We were extremely happy with the service we received from Petstay. Since having Buster it was the first time we had left him with someone else other than family, therefore we needed to ensure he was going to a loving home for 10 days. Lynette reassured me from the first conversation we had that Buster would be well looked after.

Once we met Katy, I knew Buster would be happy as she also had 2 children similar age to ours and Buster loves children! When Katy first met Buster, she made a real fuss over him and he loved all the attention he got. Katy looked after Buster like she was his owner, and treated him like part of the family.

Lynette was able to find a PetStay carer at very short notice after the carer who originally arranged to look after our dog, Motley had to cancel due to the sad loss of their own dog. I used PetStay for our dog Ted and Lynette was very helpful in finding someone that would look after Ted who didn’t mind him sleeping on the bed. Angela and her family made us feel very welcome and was very loving towards Ted. I chose Pet Stay as I didn’t want Ted going into kennels because he came from the dogs trust and I didn’t like the thought of him going back in them. This was the first time we have left Ted with anyone and he was very happy when we went to pick him up. I would defiantly use Lynette and Angela again.


I used PetStay last minute as let down by someone else. Lynette was brilliant and managed to find someone to look after Mylo. I was a little worried about leaving him with someone I didn’t know in their home, partly because he is a large clumsy dog and a little concerned he may break something but Angela was very welcoming and reassuring. Angela and her family were lovely and I think Mylo was probably very spoilt for the week and on his best behaviour as didn’t break anything!! I will definitely use Lynette and Angela again.
