PetStay Edinburgh, East & South Lothian Branch
Hello! My name is Alice and welcome to PetStay Edinburgh, East and South Lothian.
PetStay Edinburgh, East and South Lothian are proud of being a 5 Star premium dog boarding service. Our primary aim is to give dogs a holiday they truly deserve. Whether it is an active holiday, a relaxing holiday or a bit of both, PetStay will provide your dog with all their needs. Over Edinburgh, East Lothian, Mid Lothian and as far down as Peebles, we have a wonderful group of dog carers who welcome guest dogs with open arms into their home. We are continuing to receive excellent reviews from satisfied customers and happy dogs. PetStay welcomes dogs back time and time again which is great to see as they get to know their carer well and love it more each time! PetStay has home boarded so many fantastic dogs and the carers are delighted to look after your four-legged friends.
Home boarding your dog is the perfect alternative to kennels to ensure that both you and your dog are happy. I could never stand the thought of leaving my dogs locked up in kennels whilst I went away. I believe that every dog should enjoy their time away just as much as their owner.
PetStay ensures that your dog will stay in a comfortable, homely environment and will be extremely well looked after by one of our carefully considered and handpicked carers. It is important to us that we match your dog and the carer accordingly to ensure they are both right for each other. We will make sure that the carer can adapt to your dog’s daily routine. Our carers are dog fanatics who have the desired experience to ensure your dog will have the most stress-free and enjoyable holiday. Your dogs will always be in the company of the boarder, which means they will have all the attention and love they could hope for!
We also make sure the vital safety measures are in place. Each of our carers has been carefully recruited, fully licensed and vetted through their local authority and insured through PetStay. All PetStay carers comply with PetStay and the council’s policies, which means their homes are extremely dog-friendly.
Before your dog officially boards with PetStay and you set off on your holidays, we will have an initial meet and greet where you and your dog will be introduced to the carer in their home. This will give you the peace of mind and know that your dog will be in safe hands and happy. Then everyone can relax!
PetStay is always on the look out for new dog carers within the EH postcode! We are looking for people who are mad about dogs and have good experience looking after dogs. Please see the “ Become a Dog Carer” tab on the left hand side of the page.

We are so happy we found Petstay. Our senior dog is a rescue and has issues with being alone, will eat anything he can, does not particularly trust other dogs nor children and is allergic to several food types. We felt finding an appropriate carer will be challenging but within a day Alice had two options ready for us. Scott and Iain live near us so our dog could stay in a familiar environment. They followed all our instructions and arranged a great week for Freddie. He was clearly happy, healthy and secure the whole week with lots of walks, cuddles and playtime. I was completely at peace the whole time I was away- and I must admit I am an awfully worried person when it comes to our dog! They are true animal lovers and wonderful people who provided a lovely experience for our boy.
Alice was great in helping us find alternative home boarding arrangements for our Weimy, Our dog as most are i’m sure is quite needy, and we wanted to make sure he would be happy for his holidays. Alice gave us a number of options of suitable stays for Rupert with an upcoming trip we had planned. The meeting process with a prospective carer was all arranged easily, and the confidence in details taken & expectations of care provided were all just as we wanted for Rupert. Rupert has since holiday’d at the same place a couple of times now & has been more than superbly looked after and taken care of a part of the family! We always come back to a happy, well loved & looked after, content Dog!! Thanks to Alice, and her great PetStay families, we can go away with confidence.
Really loved our PetStay experience. Alice did a great job of matching us up with Kirsteen who did a fab job looking after our lab Nala. We had been nervous to leave her for the first time but Kirsteen kept us up to date with lots of photos and updates! Nala seemed to have a ball! Would definitely use PetStay again!
Pickles & Chutney
We have used PetStay twice now for our two Border Terriers, Pickle & Chutney. We were grateful to PetStay for finding us a carer at quite short notice. We knew when we met Janet for a pre-stay visit that our precious pets would be well cared for. She clearly loves animals and quickly developed a rapport with our two girls. On our return after three weeks, it was lovely to see Pickle and Chutney looking happy and healthy, and not at all in a hurry to leave Janet’s side! We would fully recommend PetStay.
My “boy” Jasper has special requirements, he is deaf, blind and diabetic, I was very nervous going away leaving him with a carer. My mind was put at ease after meeting our carer before we went away to discuss what Jasper required, we should not have worried As expected he was superbly looked after, all his needs catered for including administering insulin injections twice daily. He came back in great spirit and was looking good. We will be back again looking for help with holidays not too far away.
Benson & Brodie
After an initial hicup, which Alice from the Edinburgh branch quickly sorted out for us, our boys (and they are big Briard boys) were well looked after by Sheila and Graham. They were happy and active when we went to pick them up. They had even been brushed, not an easy job. I would recommend the Edinburgh branch of PetStay.
Marley & Murphy
I would highly recommend PetStay Edinburgh. I was anxious about my 2 labradoodle boys going to stay with somebody outside our family. Alice found a lovely family who looked after my boys really well. It was definitely a home from home for them. They looked happy as Steph sent me photos and messages every day and so put my mind at ease. They have had 2 holidays with them and will definitely use PetStay again for our next holiday. Steph and Scott are really lovely and they have 2 lovely wee girls and my boys got on really well with the whole family.
Can’t thank them enough.
Jake & Poppy
We used PetStay for the first time as we have just moved to Scotland. I must say Alice was very efficient in finding us a pet sitter offering us 3 all within a few miles. We chose Magda and Dominic who were very good and the dogs gave there blessing to such and extent we had to prise them away from their temporary home. We definitely use them again. Thank you
‘We will be using PetStay again. Very good communication (Alice King) with us right from the start which made the whole process in finding the perfect holiday home for our beautiful Cocker Spaniel reassuring. We had never left her before to go on holiday (usually with friends) but Peter and Norma were very loving right from the start. They even sent pictures of our dog having so much fun. Thank you’
Our lively Jack Russell, Fudge, stayed with Michelle and Family and with Alice for a prolonged stay in Autumn 2019. We were a little concerned about leaving her for several weeks but we had no need to worry. Fudge obviously had a great time, Alice sent us several photos of her asleep and happy on laps of several family members! We would have no hesitation about doing the same again. We met Alice and Michelle ahead of the stay, and we had a trial night which I would recommend to other customers as it gave us some peace of mind. Thank you both
Buddy & Gracie
“Alice looked after Buddy and Gracie really well. We felt comfortable leaving them as she had invited us round and I could see that the dogs would be safe. It meant that we didn’t feel anxious leaving them. The dogs had a ball! That’s a huge relief for us. 😁.”
“Cannot recommend PetStay enough. Only echoing what’s already been said but the family we were matched with (Scott, Steph and girls) took Rosie in as her own and we could tell from the daily updates that she was having a great time. Will absolutely use again!”
Teddy & Frankie
“We used PetStay for the first time this summer for our two Cockerpoo’s Frankie and Teddy. Alice at PetStay was great at organising a suitable carer for the boys giving us several options. The boys stayed with Magda who was just lovely. I met with Magda before their stay to discuss their routines etc and felt very happy to leave the boys with her. I got the feeling she really enjoyed having the boys and we would definitely use PetStay again.”
“We were going to New York at Christmas and as much we were looking forward to our holiday I was anxious about trusting someone to look after our French Bulldog Bow, she was 8 months old at the time and a bit of a handful.
Putting Bow in a kennel wasn’t an option I considered. I looked at various options online and came across PetStay. I got in touch with Alice and she arranged for us to meet a family who could look after Bow. We took Bow to meet Scott, Steph and their girls at their home. From the initial meeting I knew that Bow would be in safe hands in a lovely family home with decent people. Steph was fantastic keeping in touch with me daily and sending photo’s so I knew my girl was okay and settled. Bow went back in August for over 2 weeks and loves all the attention and fun she has playing with the children. So much so she genuinely doesn’t want to come home and actually gets grumpy about it! I would highly recommend this service and I’m happy that Alice put us in touch with this lovely family as we 100% knew Bow was well looked after which meant we could relax and enjoy our holiday. I believe she was treated like part of the family the time she was there.
Big Thanks Scott, Steph, The Girls and Alice. x”
Lisa & Sean
“This was my 1st time leaving my little Maltese Nico while i went on holiday. Kennels wasn’t an option for me as i knew Nico wouldn’t cope as he’s used to having someone with him most of the day, so home boarding seemed like the perfect solution.
I was anxious and dreading leaving Nico for the 1st time while i was away, but i had no need to worry. The family PetStay found to look after Nico were lovely “Michelle & Craig” took great care of him. I was sent lots of updates including photos and videos, my mind was put at ease with the updates and i was able to enjoy my holiday knowing Nico was OK and being well looked after.
Also want to add that Alice from PetStay was great at finding me a family that was perfect for Nicos needs, Alice was always very responsive to my messages and e-mails and answered all my questions (which were a lot lol)
Thank you Alice, I would highly recommend PetStay and i’ve already used them again and will again in future x”
“Sasha is extremely well looked after by her holiday parents Peter and Norma enjoying walks to new places. Sasha is on medication and Norma is only too happy to take care of this giving me peace of mind. When I drop her off she just trots in and makes herself at home.”
“We had never left our puppy with anybody and were nervous but Kirsteen treated Keira like she was her own and kept us updated on how she was getting on and sent photos of her too. Keira had a fantastic time staying with Kirsteen and we’ve been back to visit too….a first class service!”
“We were delighted with the service. It was all very professionally carried out. Janet was great with our dog Molly and when we took Molly back to Janet for a second time she bounded into Janet’s house glad to be back again for another holiday.”
“Barron has told me that he absolutely loved staying with Erica and her family last weekend! Even though there were cats there, he got all the attention and cuddles he could possibly want! Even if he was cheeky and snuck up onto the sofa! Thanks Erica! And thanks Kaia for the lovely poem about Barron xx.”
“We are so pleased to have found PetStay. Ruby stayed with Alice while we were on holiday. We received regular updates and photos on what Ruby was up to. Alice was fantastic and knew exactly how to look after our slightly boisterous Labrador. PetStay is great value for money and its ideal knowing that we have left Ruby in such great hands, where she is looked after so lovingly. We will be using PetStay going forward and would thoroughly recommend Alice.”
“Such a good experience! We were so nervous about leaving our boy for the first time and very relieved to find PetStay, where people look after your dog as the only dog in the home and treat him like their own. This was certainly true for Solo who had a wonderful time with the very kind and loving Helen and David. He was clearly very happy and safe and they did everything to make his routine as familiar as possible. We had a very reassuring email update from Alice and the welcome back from our settled, happy dog was just lovely.”
“My dog had a blast with Alice. Home from home and was really taken care of. I received regular updates and photos and could see how happy she was. Never used kennels and aged 6 didn’t think she would have adjusted to it. Alice was extremely accommodating with our flight time which took the pressure off.”
“Alice from PetStay Edinburgh, East and South Lothian was great with helping me find someone to look after my cockapoo snickers. The carers we met through her were absolutely lovely and cared for snickers as if he was their own. And even when I needed someone last minute and our usual carers were unavailable, Alice tried to help out as quickly as she could. Will definitely be using PetStay again!.”
“Alice found the most perfect carers for Hugo whilst we were away on holiday. We were very anxious about leaving him – but we were contacted with updates and the whole process was great from start to finish. Would definitely recommend this service.”
Charlie & Ted
“Really happy with the service provided by PetStay. Alice was great at the organising stage and Kirsteen was such a perfect fit for my boys Charlie & Ted and they have made a friend for life. I will definitely use Petstay again in the future.”
Charlie & Poppy
“Absolute loved using PetStay and will definitely use them again x”
“Douglas the staffx had a 5 star stay in Dunbar and Edinburgh while I was abroad. Petstay took the trouble to understand my dog’s personality and individual routine and I’m grateful that Alice, Sheila and Sophie looked after him so well. Thank you to all.ain.”
Poppy, Liz & Bauma
“Alice looked after our 3 dogs for a weekend and we couldn’t be happier with the service. From the beginning Alice was super helpful and was very thorough with getting all the information she needed about our girls which really put our minds at rest. She kept us updated throughout the weekend and the when we went to collect them they didn’t want to leave which tells us how fantastically they were looked after! We are really grateful to Alice for looking after our girls so what well and would definitely use her again.”
“We are so pleased with the help Alice at Petstay provided in arranging excellent home stay care for our Manchester Terrier. From the outset communication was prompt, professional and caring and Alice found us the perfect base for our dog, who loved her stay. We were sent updates and felt comfortable throughout that she was being cared for in a comfortable home environment. We will definitely be seeking Alice’s help again in the future.”
“Very friendly and professional service. The boarder kept in regular contact with myself and sent photos of the pups whilst we were away. Would definitely recommend and will use this service again 👍🏼 🐶”
“ I have used PeStay twice this year. Alfie was placed at my request with Helen & David both times. They are a lovely couple who were great with Alfie. This was the first time we had left Alfie and I would have no hesitation in using them again. Alfie had a great time .
Highly recommend petstay. 5 stars from Alfie.”
“Following a recommendation from another customer, we decided to let our 2 year old lab, Mac, board with PetStay while we were away for a week. We took Mac to Alice and Sophie’s for an initial meeting a few weeks in advance and he got on fine with them and the house, which was very reassuring. During the actual stay, he seems to have had a great time (especially at Portobello beach) and has returned happy and healthy. We especially appreciated the occasional ‘Pupdates’ email and photos we received while we were away.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Petstay to other owners as it’s obviously run by dog lovers who care for and spend time with the dogs in their care.”
Gordon & Pat
“Alice looked after our dog, Iris, herself and did an amazing job. She sent us pictures and updates while we were away and we came home to a very happy dog. I would highly recommend PetStay as a friendlier and happier alternative to kennels.”
“Just wanted to send a wee note to thank you for arranging Luna’s stay with Stewart and Sandra. She was very well looked after and I was able to relax on hols because I wasn’t worrying about her!
We had a disaster coming home because our flight was cancelled and we didn’t get back until after midnight but Stewart and Sandra were kind enough to keep Luna until the morning. We were very grateful.
Thanks again and I’ll be in touch when I need another home stay for Luna.”
Angus & Dugald
“Prior to using PetStay I worried about booking holidays now I do not. Alice has found the most special people who look after our dogs even better than we do! “It’s amazing.”
Diane – North Berwick
“PetStay were absolutely wonderful and Alice could not have been more helpful or understanding. She placed Tess with the perfect hosts. Bob and Irene formed an instant bond with Tess and we were able to go on holiday with confidence that she would be well cared for and happy. It was very reassuring for us and Tess to meet Bob and Irene before we left her with them. When we picked her up, it was very clear that she’d had a wonderful time and during our holiday they were in touch to reassure us that she’d settled well.”
Gillian – Edinburgh City
“Thank you so much for finding such a lovely family for Bella to stay with. Sandra and Stewart welcomed her into their home, looked after her health needs, walked and played with her. Such a relief to know that she was having a good time whilst we were away. Very efficient service from Alice as well.”
Roxy & Ruby
Me and my family went to Florida for 2 weeks, and to start with we were a bit concerned on where to put our pugs (Roxy and Ruby) but after researching I looked into PetStay, I decided to put my pugs there and it was honestly the best thing ever for them as they got their own wee holiday. We got constant updates by videos and picture. Alice couldn’t have made it any better for the pugs either and I would highly recommend for anyone who is unsure my pugs were not the happiest to come home! I think they enjoyed it there that much that they didn’t want to come home. I cannot thank Alice enough for watching them and I appreciate everything that she done for them.
Graeme & Lisa,
‘PetStay matched our Dalmatian Zeus with an ideal host family. He had a great time staying with Ruth and Alistair, got lots of exercise and attention and settled well. We are really pleased and have already booked him in for another stay.’
We would certainly recommend Petstay as a reassuring alternative to using kennels . Our dog Archie had a fabulous stay with Ruth and Alastair . He really became part of the family when he stayed with them for a week’s holiday and had a wonderful time with lots of walks and their undivided attention of course!! It was very reassuring to have visited the couple in their home with Archie so he could meet them beforehand and vice versa.
We also found Alice very professional but equally friendly and approachable in organising everything for us!

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer
What are the requirements of becoming a carer?
You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.
How are your carers vetted?
If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.
How many dogs can I look after?
Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.
Do I have to provide the food?
No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.
Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?
Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.
What about walking the dogs?
All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.
What if the dog becomes ill?
We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.
Will I be paid?
You will receive a daily allowance starting from £13.50 per day.
What happens next?
If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

A Pet’s Holiday: Why Dog Home Boarding is the Best Choice for Your Pet
Are you planning a getaway, but worried about who will take care of your furry friend while you’re gone? Home from home dog boarding can be a great way to pamper your pet with extra attention and special care while you enjoy your holiday. Our blog will explore some of the benefits and give you an inside look into our local dog and puppy sitting services.
What’s the Day-to-Day Like for Dog Boarding in East Lothian and Midlothian?
My name is Mojo, and I’m a nine-year-old Springer Spaniel. I’m a frequent dog guest at PetStay and am looking forward to visiting my carer, Alice, this summer for another two weeks of playing, outdoor walks and, of course, plenty of cuddles.
She’s pretty good at sticking to my basic routine, which as an aging gentleman I really appreciate. Each morning, we start our day with my breakfast, a healthy bowl of kibble, before going outside for a piddle.
We then head to the local park for a walk and a chance to play with my special ring. Sometimes we even head to the beach. I love when Alice takes me for long walks around Edinburgh and Mid Lothian as I get to smell new smells and explore new places.
At the end of the day, I get a final walk before going to bed. I get two biscuits (lucky boy) once I’m in bed — a perfect end to a perfect day.
I know you’ll love your holiday dog sitter as much as I love Alice.
Local Walks Used by Our Dog Sitters in East and Midlothian
Our Mid and East Lothian dog sitters know some of the best walks in the local area. Here are our three favourites:
● John Muir Way (East Lothian). The John Muir Way stretches across East Lothian, and our dog sitters often choose to do certain sections. One of our favourites is the first 2.5km that goes along Aberlady Bay.
● Lammermuir Hills (East Lothian). Getting outside and exploring Scotland’s stunning nature is certainly one of the benefits of being an East Lothian dog sitter. We especially like the gorgeous Lammermuir Hills, and our special furry guests seem to enjoy them too!
● Pentland Hills (Midlothian). The Pentland Hills have a range of fantastic walking routes from short hourly ones to longer 10km walks. Some of our more active Midlothian dog sitters spend all day here, enjoying the fresh air and exercising guests’ four legs.
Dog Home Boarding: An Alternative to Dog Kennels
Rather than sending your furry family members to a kennel, our dog boarding services in East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh offer a much more attractive option. Staying with one of our dedicated and experienced carers will allow your furry family member a home-away-from-home. Somewhere they can relax and experience the full benefits of having their own devoted dog sitter.
Some of the benefits of overnight dog sitting includes:
● Dogs are matched perfectly with sitters that can meet their needs and keep their routines
● Most holiday dog sitters work from home or are retired, so dogs are rarely left alone
● Each of our dedicated sitters has a real passion for dogs so will give your pup the attention they deserve
● Every home has a private garden so your pet will have loads of room to run around
● Your dog will be the only client dog in the house so holiday pet sitters can focus on them 100%
● You’ll meet your dog sitter before your holiday so you’ll have the ultimate say over whether it’s a good match.
