About Me

Hello, my name is Ruth, and I am the owner of PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders

When our own dog passed, we felt such an emptiness, but we weren’t quite ready to get a new dog yet, we missed the company but enjoyed our freedom.
I was on an Internet site scrolling when I found PetStay and upon reading I thought if our dog was still with us that’s where I would have liked her to go, further reading led me to see Carers where needed. After our checks and getting my licence, I became a carer or “Auntie Woofie” with my close customers and loving every minute.

I love earning the trust from each new dog and even learning about different breeds. It gave me a new spring in my step with all my new not only dog friends but their humans as well. Now I’ve the opportunity not only to remain a carer but as the proud new owner of PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders, I will continue to provide passion and love for dogs with pride.

Why Choose PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders

The benefits of home boarding are being able to tailor make your dog’s “holiday” with PetStay. This means, we are able to follow the routines you already have in place at your own home, be that sleeping, feeding, exercise or companionship. Our carers will treat your dog as their own and that’s important, to you and to them!

We are fully licensed, and our carers are covered by our public liability insurance for your peace of mind.

Some of our carers may have a dog of their own. If your pooch is happy to stay with another friendly dog, we’ll arrange a meet-up so they can get acquainted and see if they’re a good match.

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.
We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.
You will receive a daily allowance starting from £17 per day.
If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

Frank

April 2025

This is our third time using Ruth at PetStay and yet again another brilliant experience!! Our boxer dog Frank loved spending time with Ruth and family and was very well pampered and looked after whilst we were on holiday. We had complete peace of mind and had regular pup dates from her with photos and videos to see how he was doing. We would highly recommend and Frank looks forward to his next sleepover/holiday!

Paddy

March 2025

Sheila is our first choice as a carer and boarder for Paddy. He can be anxious and has separation issues which makes us reluctant to leave him at all but Sheila is so calm and reassuring that we have no concerns about leaving him and we know that he settles down soon after we leave. Sheila takes her responsibilities seriously and follows Paddy’s walking and feeding regime and he has lovely walks with her at least twice a day. We have no hesitation in recommending Sheila

Amber and Hamish

January 2025
After a slight mishap last time involving a plastic toy, we were fully confident about leaving Amber and Hamish with Cath and Jim. She had installed a gate to the spare room and ensured all doors were closed when they left the house.  The dogs felt so at home they even preferred to sleep in their bedroom at night (usually sleep in living room at our house). Cath sent us regular photos and updates, and we could see how comfortable and relaxed the dogs were.  We wouldn’t hesitate about leaving our dogs in their care again. Laura

Whisky

November 2024
I used the Edinburgh franchise and it was very good. Contact with Ruth was easy and efficient. Our dog carer agreed to a “trial run” for one night because it was my puppy’s first time away and I was nervous. The pup had a lovely time, was well looked after and I’ll be happy to leave him with PetStay again. Ela

Olwyn

November 2024
I cannot recommend PetStay highly enough. I am able to go on holiday and not worry at all about Olwyn. Ruth is amazing with Olwyn, administering her frequent medication, playing tugs of war with her and looking after her so well. I love receiving regular photos and updates. They show how settled Olwyn is and how much she loves Ruth and Tom. Gillian

Abi

September 2024
Tricia and Ian did a wonderful job looking after our dog Leah for a week, we received regular updates and photos and could see that Leah was really settled and happy which was very reassuring. Our dog has a few issues around food and Tricia and Ian were sensitive to this and clearly took excellent care of Leah – thank you

Delphi

September 2024
We were very relaxed about our Delphi when we were on holiday, usually there are some concerns/doubts that she will be fine. Everything went smoothly and Delphi settled in after the first night. It was good to know that she was being well looked after and Sheila was super calm given Delphi can be excitable. It certainly worked out very well for us and importantly for Delphi, who immediately went back to her home routine. So excellent all round for us. Margaret

Stella

September 2024
Catherine and Jim looked after our older greyhound really wonderfully. They gave her the same experiences she has at home with such sensitivity and allowed her to sleep upstairs in their room. We are so pleased that we can go away completely assured she will be fine. They were endlessly flexible making up food as she likes it. Catherine and Jim are amazing carers and I am very grateful to them.

Layla

September 2024
Ruth treats all her ‘guest dogs’ as she would her own. She totally understands dogs and absolutely loves them. Layla went off with her happily and had a great wee holiday. (Didn’t stop her ‘mugging’ me with welcoming love when I got back!) Very very satisfied. Fran

Miko

September 2024
I boarded my 3 year old lab, Miko with Evelyn and Keith recently while our whole family were away for a wedding, and a good time was had by all!! Miko can be a nervous boy who wouldn’t be suited to kennel stays, so I contacted Ruth at Edinburgh and East Lothian PetStay a few months ago and had a one night trial stay for Miko before he spent 4 nights with Evelyn and Keith. As a result, Miko was very relaxed both on drop off and pick up too. Daily photos and videos of his activities were sent while we were away which was very reassuring. I wouldn’t hesitate to board through PetStay again….thank you!! Anita

Clova

September 2024
Clova, our elderly Norfolk terrier, is back from another stay with the lovely PetStay hosts in Haddington. It is so reassuring to leave Clova in their care knowing that they have her best interests at heart. They are so thoughtful and considerate and we could not leave Clova with anyone better. We feel lucky to have found such great hosts. Susie

Cuillin

August 2024
PetStay were able to help out for a last minute booking and I couldn’t recommend Evelyn and Keith highly enough. Right from the start Cuillin was made to feel at home and they made sure he was the centre of attention throughout. Unfortunately Cuillin was ill during his stay but again. Evelyn and Keith together with PetStay made sure he received the sort of care that only people who really care can give. Thank you sooooo much. Ian

Ursula

August 2024
Another extremely good experience of using PetStay. Sheila took very good care of our 2 year old Welsh Terrier and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy his time in her home and all the lovely walks.

Blaze

August 2024
A fantastic way of getting your pet looked after my dogs carers / family were absolutely great with him as he was with them no need to worry if they are getting looked after properly updates were given regularly on there up keep 100% use again. Kenneth

Fern

August 2024
Thank you so much to Ruth for arranging Ferns care with Sheila. The process went very smoothly. As we visit family for three weeks every summer, it is very important to know that Fern is happy and healthy whilst we are away. Sheila sent regular updates and photos which was very reassuring. We were greeted by a bouncing, yipping Fern when we returned, which was lovely. Many thanks Gill

Barney

August 2024
5 stars seems too low! We found the lovely Ruth & PetStay prior to a 2 week family holiday and after a bad kennelling experience (I know..!). Our boy has terrible separation anxiety so we had to find someone who would be able to ensure he isn’t left alone. I describe Ruth as “sunshine personified”! Luckily our paths crossed when they did as we were really struggling to see how we could ever go on holiday. She is clearly so passionate about her business and that shines through. We are now able to leave Barney in her great care and have worry-free holidays knowing he is also having a wonderful time. We love getting his pupdates. Emma

Murphy & Maple

July 2024
It was our first experience of using PetStay and I’m so glad we did. Our two miniature cockapoo’s Murphy and Maple had the most fantastic week with Evelyn and Keith, they treated them like they were their own and looked after them amazingly with lots of cuddles , walks in the country and time in the garden . Evelyn and Keith sent us regular updates and photo it’s the first time on holiday I’ve felt able to relax knowing that our beloved fur balls were being looked after so well. I couldn’t recommend Evelyn and Keith highly enough they are such a lovely couple . Not forgetting Ruth who matched our dogs needs perfectly with Evelyn and Keith and made the whole process so easy, fantastic communication and very professional thank you all again ❤️ . Pauline

Betsy

July 2024
Ruth is such a joy to deal with. She clearly loves dogs and has an excellent rapport with all of the carers. The standard of care is exceptional and Betsy always comes back looking happy and well. Alasdair

Alfie

July 2024
Mhairi looked after Alfie so well. He had a great time and we felt happy that he was being well looked after and showered with love while we were away. She kept us updated with regular pics and we could really enjoy our holiday knowing that our boy was happy. Claire

Sully

July 2024
Tricia and Iain welcomed Sully into their home and looked after him wonderfully. This wasn’t his first stay there and we could tell he was happy to go back there; almost pulling us to the front door. I believe this says it all. PetStay themselves are fantastic and Ruth always wants to check in to see everything is as it should be. Thank you Laura

Olwyn

June 2024
Olwyn had another fabulous time with Ruth at PetStay Edinburgh. Olwyn requires medication several times each day and this was no trouble to Ruth. We received lovely messages and photos throughout the time we were away. Everything is so well managed that we have booked more stays with Ruth. GD
