About Me
Hello, my name is Ruth, and I am the owner of PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders
When our own dog passed, we felt such an emptiness, but we weren’t quite ready to get a new dog yet, we missed the company but enjoyed our freedom.
I was on an Internet site scrolling when I found PetStay and upon reading I thought if our dog was still with us that’s where I would have liked her to go, further reading led me to see Carers where needed. After our checks and getting my licence, I became a carer or “Auntie Woofie” with my close customers and loving every minute.
I love earning the trust from each new dog and even learning about different breeds. It gave me a new spring in my step with all my new not only dog friends but their humans as well. Now I’ve the opportunity not only to remain a carer but as the proud new owner of PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders, I will continue to provide passion and love for dogs with pride.
Why Choose PetStay Edinburgh, East Lothians & Scottish Borders
Whether it’s a long weekend away, business trip or a fortnights holiday, PetStay can provide your four-legged friend with all of the love and attention they would receive at home. The benefits of home boarding are being able to tailor make your dog’s “holiday” with PetStay. This means, we are able to follow the routines you already have in place at your own home, be that sleeping, feeding, exercise or companionship. Our carers will treat your dog as their own and that’s important, to you and to them!
Our Dog Carers
At PetStay we handpicked our Doggie Carers, ensuring we only employ the very best. All carers are experienced dog owners and most importantly – love dogs! You can choose to either board your dog(s) alone or if your dog enjoys the company of another dog, with a carer who has a friendly dog of their own. A “sniffing out” meeting will be set up so you and your dog(s) can meet their carer and see their holiday home beforehand. Safety is very important to us, so we never mix dogs from different families and all hosts are personally checked by me, licensed by the local authority and fully insured.
How it Works
I take great care and enjoyment in getting to know you and your dog before they home board with PetStay and take full details of your dog so that I can find the perfect carer for him or her. I will guide you through the booking process and a “holiday list” will be provided of essential items that will need to be packed to make sure your dog(s) have their favourite things with them. So, if you would like to book a holiday with us or find out more about our service, please do get in touch on the numbers or email below. I look forward to speaking with you!
Become a Carer
If you would like to apply to become a carer, I’d love to hear from you. All that is necessary is that you have experience in looking after dogs, are at home during the day and have a secure garden. You could become part of the PetStay Team by caring for someone else’s family dog in your home with the added bonus of earning an income. It’s such a rewarding hobby that I’m sure you will love!

Catherine and Jim looked after our older greyhound really wonderfully. They gave her the same experiences she has at home with such sensitivity and allowed her to sleep upstairs in their room. We are so pleased that we can go away completely assured she will be fine. They were endlessly flexible making up food as she likes it. Catherine and Jim are amazing carers and I am very grateful to them

Ruth treats all her ‘guest dogs’ as she would her own. She totally understands dogs and absolutely loves them. Layla went off with her happily and had a great wee holiday. (Didn’t stop her ‘mugging’ me with welcoming love when I got back!) Very very satisfied.

I boarded my 3 year old lab, Miko with Evelyn and Keith recently while our whole family were away for a wedding, and a good time was had by all!! Miko can be a nervous boy who wouldn’t be suited to kennel stays, so I contacted Ruth at Edinburgh and East Lothian PetStay a few months ago and had a one night trial stay for Miko before he spent 4 nights with Evelyn and Keith. As a result, Miko was very relaxed both on drop off and pick up too. Daily photos and videos of his activities were sent while we were away which was very reassuring. I wouldn’t hesitate to board through PetStay again….thank you!!

Clova, our elderly Norfolk terrier, is back from another stay with the lovely PetStay hosts in Haddington. It is so reassuring to leave Clova in their care knowing that they have her best interests at heart. They are so thoughtful and considerate and we could not leave Clova with anyone better. We feel lucky to have found such great hosts.

PetStay were able to help out for a last minute booking and I couldn’t recommend Evelyn and Keith highly enough. Right from the start Cuillin was made to feel at home and they made sure he was the centre of attention throughout. Unfortunately Cuillin was ill during his stay but again. Evelyn and Keith together with PetStay made sure he received the sort of care that only people who really care can give. Thank you sooooo much.

Thank you so much to Ruth for arranging Ferns care with Sheila. The process went very smoothly. As we visit family for three weeks every summer, it is very important to know that Fern is happy and healthy whilst we are away. Sheila sent regular updates and photos which was very reassuring. We were greeted by a bouncing, yipping Fern when we returned, which was lovely.
Many thanks

5 stars seems too low! We found the lovely Ruth & PetStay prior to a 2 week family holiday and after a bad kennelling experience (I know..!). Our boy has terrible separation anxiety so we had to find someone who would be able to ensure he isn’t left alone. I describe Ruth as “sunshine personified”! Luckily our paths crossed when they did as we were really struggling to see how we could ever go on holiday. She is clearly so passionate about her business and that shines through. We are now able to leave Barney in her great care and have worry-free holidays knowing he is also having a wonderful time. We love getting his pupdates.

It was our first experience of using PetStay and I’m so glad we did. Our two miniature cockapoo’s Murphy and Maple had the most fantastic week with Evelyn and Keith, they treated them like they were their own and looked after them amazingly with lots of cuddles , walks in the country and time in the garden . Evelyn and Keith sent us regular updates and photo it’s the first time on holiday I’ve felt able to relax knowing that our beloved fur balls were being looked after so well. I couldn’t recommend Evelyn and Keith highly enough they are such a lovely couple . Not forgetting Ruth who matched our dogs needs perfectly with Evelyn and Keith and made the whole process so easy, fantastic communication and very professional thank you all again ❤️ .

I have used PetStay for a number of years now. They ensure that the placements meet the needs of the dog and the hosts are vetted and trained to care for your pet. Haggis looks forward to going to stay with Catherine and James. He can’t wait to get out if the car to greet Catherine and James. They understand his ways and ensure that his stay is enjoyable. I can go away knowing that he is happy and settled. His stay with his hosts is like being at home away from home

We can thoroughly recommend the service that PetStay Edinburgh East and South Lothian provides. It is convenient and reasonably priced and we have the comfort of a professional organisation backing up the care. Michelle and Craig regularly take care of our dog Toby. They are great with him and he loves to visit them. It is really a home from home and for our dog at least is far better than kennels. Highly recommended.

Our first holiday leaving our nervous dog and it was a great success. I had no worries leaving her with Cath and Jim. They prepared me very well with practical advice and took time to get to know my dogs habits and likes. Straight away I could tell this was the perfect home from home. My dog settled well and we soon received a photo of her relaxed and happy. We have already booked another PetStay with the wonderful Cath and Jim.

Ruth at PetStay is an absolute legend. Every time I’ve needed to book our toller in she’s linked us up with a wonderful carer (same family every time luckily, our dog loves them). She also linked a family members dog up with a carer a week before our wedding when there were no other options which saved the day. Fab service and can’t praise enough

We had the lovely Mhairi looking after our wee cocker spaniel for a week recently. She made me feel super comfortable when we went to do the initial meet, obviously loved my dog and was keen to learn all about her to try and make her as at home as possible. While we were away we got a short daily update with a photo which helped me know my dog was being well looked after. When we went to pick her up I could tell she had a great time, was obviously very comfortable with Mhairi and she was happy to talk about what they had got up to while we were away. Mhairi was excellent and I expect we will be using her again on our next holiday!

I recently entrusted my Dalmatian, Snoopy, to the care of PetStay and was fortunate enough to have Ruth as his sitter. I cannot express how grateful I am for the outstanding service she provided. Ruth’s communication was second to none. She consistently asked thoughtful questions about Snoopy’s needs and preferences, putting us at ease and demonstrating her genuine concern for his well-being.Throughout Snoopy’s stay, Ruth sent regular updates and a plethora of pictures, which allowed us to stay connected with our beloved pet. It was heartwarming to see him happy and content in her care. Most importantly, Ruth provided Snoopy with all the love and attention he needed. Her nurturing approach made him feel right at home, and we couldn’t be happier with the warmth and kindness she extended to him.I wholeheartedly recommend PetStay, especially if you have the privilege of having Ruth as your pet sitter. We look forward to Snoopy’s next visit, and we are confident he’ll be in the best of hands.Thank you, Ruth, for being an exceptional caregiver to our furry family member!

Initially we weren’t sure how our dogs would react to living with ‘complete strangers’. At our introduction meeting with Catherine and James in their lovely home in East Lothian our wee dogs Barney and Lucie, 3 year old brother and sister Chihuahua/Pomeranian crosses, were made to feel very welcome and they took to the house immediately. Catherine and James also took to our dogs immediately and it was obvious from the get go that they would all get on well. Which they did.
So thanks again to Ruth and the team , especially Catherine and James for all their efforts in making the whole process not only smooth but an absolute pleasure which are very much appreciated and we will certainly be contacting PetStay in the future.

Freddie
We are so happy we found Petstay. Our senior dog is a rescue and has issues with being alone, will eat anything he can, does not particularly trust other dogs nor children and is allergic to several food types. We felt finding an appropriate carer will be challenging but within a day Alice had two options ready for us. Scott and Iain live near us so our dog could stay in a familiar environment. They followed all our instructions and arranged a great week for Freddie. He was clearly happy, healthy and secure the whole week with lots of walks, cuddles and playtime. I was completely at peace the whole time I was away- and I must admit I am an awfully worried person when it comes to our dog! They are true animal lovers and wonderful people who provided a lovely experience for our boy.

Alice was great in helping us find alternative home boarding arrangements for our Weimy, Our dog as most are i’m sure is quite needy, and we wanted to make sure he would be happy for his holidays. Alice gave us a number of options of suitable stays for Rupert with an upcoming trip we had planned. The meeting process with a prospective carer was all arranged easily, and the confidence in details taken & expectations of care provided were all just as we wanted for Rupert. Rupert has since holiday’d at the same place a couple of times now & has been more than superbly looked after and taken care of a part of the family! We always come back to a happy, well loved & looked after, content Dog!! Thanks to Alice, and her great PetStay families, we can go away with confidence.

Bow
“We were going to New York at Christmas and as much we were looking forward to our holiday I was anxious about trusting someone to look after our French Bulldog Bow, she was 8 months old at the time and a bit of a handful.
Putting Bow in a kennel wasn’t an option I considered. I looked at various options online and came across PetStay. I got in touch with Alice and she arranged for us to meet a family who could look after Bow. We took Bow to meet Scott, Steph and their girls at their home. From the initial meeting I knew that Bow would be in safe hands in a lovely family home with decent people. Steph was fantastic keeping in touch with me daily and sending photo’s so I knew my girl was okay and settled. Bow went back in August for over 2 weeks and loves all the attention and fun she has playing with the children. So much so she genuinely doesn’t want to come home and actually gets grumpy about it! I would highly recommend this service and I’m happy that Alice put us in touch with this lovely family as we 100% knew Bow was well looked after which meant we could relax and enjoy our holiday. I believe she was treated like part of the family the time she was there.

Never used kennels and aged 6 didn’t think she would have adjusted to it. Alice was extremely accommodating with our flight time which took the pressure off.”

Snickers
“Alice from PetStay Edinburgh, East and South Lothian was great with helping me find someone to look after my cockapoo snickers. The carers we met through her were absolutely lovely and cared for snickers as if he was their own. And even when I needed someone last minute and our usual carers were unavailable, Alice tried to help out as quickly as she could. Will definitely be using PetStay again!.”

“Alice looked after our 3 dogs for a weekend and we couldn’t be happier with the service. From the beginning Alice was super helpful and was very thorough with getting all the information she needed about our girls which really put our minds at rest. She kept us updated throughout the weekend and the when we went to collect them they didn’t want to leave which tells us how fantastically they were looked after! We are really grateful to Alice for looking after our girls so what well and would definitely use her again.”

“ I have used PeStay twice this year. Alfie was placed at my request with Helen & David both times. They are a lovely couple who were great with Alfie. This was the first time we had left Alfie and I would have no hesitation in using them again. Alfie had a great time .

Mac
“Following a recommendation from another customer, we decided to let our 2 year old lab, Mac, board with PetStay while we were away for a week. We took Mac to Alice and Sophie’s for an initial meeting a few weeks in advance and he got on fine with them and the house, which was very reassuring. During the actual stay, he seems to have had a great time (especially at Portobello beach) and has returned happy and healthy. We especially appreciated the occasional ‘Pupdates’ email and photos we received while we were away.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Petstay to other owners as it’s obviously run by dog lovers who care for and spend time with the dogs in their care.”

“Just wanted to send a wee note to thank you for arranging Luna’s stay with Stewart and Sandra. She was very well looked after and I was able to relax on hols because I wasn’t worrying about her!
We had a disaster coming home because our flight was cancelled and we didn’t get back until after midnight but Stewart and Sandra were kind enough to keep Luna until the morning. We were very grateful.
Thanks again and I’ll be in touch when I need another home stay for Luna.”

“PetStay were absolutely wonderful and Alice could not have been more helpful or understanding. She placed Tess with the perfect hosts. Bob and Irene formed an instant bond with Tess and we were able to go on holiday with confidence that she would be well cared for and happy. It was very reassuring for us and Tess to meet Bob and Irene before we left her with them. When we picked her up, it was very clear that she’d had a wonderful time and during our holiday they were in touch to reassure us that she’d settled well.”

Roxy & Ruby
Me and my family went to Florida for 2 weeks, and to start with we were a bit concerned on where to put our pugs (Roxy and Ruby) but after researching I looked into PetStay, I decided to put my pugs there and it was honestly the best thing ever for them as they got their own wee holiday. We got constant updates by videos and picture. Alice couldn’t have made it any better for the pugs either and I would highly recommend for anyone who is unsure my pugs were not the happiest to come home! I think they enjoyed it there that much that they didn’t want to come home. I cannot thank Alice enough for watching them and I appreciate everything that she done for them.

Archie
We would certainly recommend Petstay as a reassuring alternative to using kennels . Our dog Archie had a fabulous stay with Ruth and Alastair . He really became part of the family when he stayed with them for a week’s holiday and had a wonderful time with lots of walks and their undivided attention of course!! It was very reassuring to have visited the couple in their home with Archie so he could meet them beforehand and vice versa.
We also found Alice very professional but equally friendly and approachable in organising everything for us!

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer
What are the requirements of becoming a carer?
You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.
How are your carers vetted?
If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.
How many dogs can I look after?
Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.
Do I have to provide the food?
No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.
Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?
Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.
What about walking the dogs?
All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.
What if the dog becomes ill?
We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.
Will I be paid?
You will receive a daily allowance starting from £19.00 per day.
What happens next?
If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

A Pet’s Holiday: Why Dog Home Boarding is the Best Choice for Your Pet
Are you planning a getaway, but worried about who will take care of your furry friend while you’re gone? Home from home dog boarding can be a great way to pamper your pet with extra attention and special care while you enjoy your holiday. Our blog will explore some of the benefits and give you an inside look into our local dog and puppy sitting services.
What’s the Day-to-Day Like for Dog Boarding in East Lothian and Midlothian?
Hello,
My name is Mojo, and I’m a nine-year-old Springer Spaniel. I’m a frequent dog guest at PetStay and am looking forward to visiting my carer, Alice, this summer for another two weeks of playing, outdoor walks and, of course, plenty of cuddles.
She’s pretty good at sticking to my basic routine, which as an aging gentleman I really appreciate. Each morning, we start our day with my breakfast, a healthy bowl of kibble, before going outside for a piddle.
We then head to the local park for a walk and a chance to play with my special ring. Sometimes we even head to the beach. I love when Alice takes me for long walks around Edinburgh and East Lothian as I get to smell new smells and explore new places.
At the end of the day, I get a final walk before going to bed. I get two biscuits (lucky boy) once I’m in bed — a perfect end to a perfect day.
I know you’ll love your holiday dog sitter as much as I love Alice.
Warm regards,
Mojo
Local Walks Used by Our Dog Sitters in East and Midlothian
Our Mid and East Lothian dog sitters know some of the best walks in the local area. Here are our three favourites:
● John Muir Way (East Lothian). The John Muir Way stretches across East Lothian, and our dog sitters often choose to do certain sections. One of our favourites is the first 2.5km that goes along Aberlady Bay.
● Lammermuir Hills (East Lothian). Getting outside and exploring Scotland’s stunning nature is certainly one of the benefits of being an East Lothian dog sitter. We especially like the gorgeous Lammermuir Hills, and our special furry guests seem to enjoy them too!
● Pentland Hills (Midlothian). The Pentland Hills have a range of fantastic walking routes from short hourly ones to longer 10km walks. Some of our more active Midlothian dog sitters spend all day here, enjoying the fresh air and exercising guests’ four legs.
Dog Home Boarding: An Alternative to Dog Kennels
Rather than sending your furry family members to a kennel, our dog boarding services in East Lothian, Midlothian and Edinburgh offer a much more attractive option. Staying with one of our dedicated and experienced carers will allow your furry family member a home-away-from-home. Somewhere they can relax and experience the full benefits of having their own devoted dog sitter.
Some of the benefits of overnight dog sitting includes:
● Dogs are matched perfectly with sitters that can meet their needs and keep their routines
● Most holiday dog sitters work from home or are retired, so dogs are rarely left alone
● Each of our dedicated sitters has a real passion for dogs so will give your pup the attention they deserve
● Every home has a private garden so your pet will have loads of room to run around
● Your dog will be the only client dog in the house so holiday pet sitters can focus on them 100%
● You’ll meet your dog sitter before your holiday so you’ll have the ultimate say over whether it’s a good match.
