PetStay Herefordshire & Worcestershire Branch

I’m Lorraine, I live right on the edge of the beautiful Cotswolds/Herefordshire/Worcestershire border. Having worked as a psychotherapist for many years within the NHS, I began to think about early retirement and a new career direction. I wanted to do something that fulfilled my need for freedom and independence that also meant I could work from home, allowed me to spend more time with my family and also our adorable 2 year old Labrador, Binky. I wanted to use my skills of helping people too and continue to earn a living! A tall order, as earning a living doing something you love can be something of a luxury in this modern world.

I have always loved dogs and the countryside having grown up around both. So when we moved back into the countryside a little over a year ago, it inspired me to revaluate what was important to me.

I started to look around at various options and one day, whilst planning a holiday and looking for somewhere to place Binky (I don’t think she would have been easy to stow away on a cruise) somewhere where she was safe, well cared for and happy, I came across PetStay. It opened up a whole new world for me. I was inspired by the PetStay ethos and passionate attitude to the needs of our beloved dogs! If like us, you consider your dog part of your family and as such you would not leave your child with someone you didn’t trust or feel would take care of them the way that you would, then you would want to leave them with a PetStay carer!

I began to make serious enquiries about joining PetStay and after meeting Carole and the PetStay head office team, I then met the amazing Emma Levings from PetStay Gloucestershire. I was inspired by her shared passion, drive and determination to provide only the highest quality service to families and their beloved dogs and to carers who take them into their homes and care for them as though they were their own.

For now, I still work as a psychotherapist as this fits neatly around my new role. But if I am correct it won’t be long before I am working full-time in my new career as the owner of PetStay Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

After intensive training and outstanding support from Head Office and other PetStay team members, I’m delighted to be able to offer this wonderful, high class, professional home from home care to dog owners within my area.

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

What are the requirements of becoming a carer?

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

How are your carers vetted?

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

Do I need to be licensed?

If you are successful then you would apply to the council for a home boarding licence (if required by the local council), we can help you with this, it is a straight forward process.

How many dogs can I look after?

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

Do I have to provide the food?

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

What about walking the dogs?

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.

What if the dog becomes ill?

We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.

How am I paid?

Your fee is paid as the dog is dropped off. This is a self-employed home-based position, is very flexible and fits around your lifestyle.

What happens next?

If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

Our Reviews

“We are the owners of a beautiful silver standard poodle puppy, Poppy. We had planned to send her to kennels like our previous dogs. However we soon realised that she needed company and could become anxious if left alone for too long. We decided to evaluate alternatives. We contacted Petstay and were introduced to Norma. We spent a couple of hours with her and they really hit it off with one another. Poppy did a trial sleep over and arrangements were made for her to stay while we were away. We have never looked back Norma is brilliant with Poppy, she receives loads of love and nothing is too much trouble. She will be back there in September and we know she is safe and cared for. Just don’t take my place in the queue.”

“We were really impressed with the care and attention to detail our Pet Stay carer, Celia, showed when looking after our little JRT. Celia was meticulous in finding out everything she could about Charlie’s routine, and genuinely was concerned to follow our guidance to the letter. We know that he’s not the easiest of dogs to care for…a typical stubborn terrier, but we were really confident and happy to leave him in Celia’s capable and kind hands! We would definitely recommend Pet Stay. It’s a really professional service with a very personal and friendly approach. Thank you.”

“This worked so well for us Pet stay are a very professional team, finding us the perfect carer for our 11 year old Staffie. We have tried other companies in the past but pet stay is by far the best. Thank you Norma for giving our Kass lots of love and cuddles while we were away. Would definitely recommend. ”

Pam has looked after Poppy for us for the last 2 weeks while we have been on holiday. I cannot thank you enough for putting us in touch with Pam, she is a lovely lady who has looked after Poppy as if she were her own. Poppy has had lots of wonderful walks and Pam has sent us some lovely pictures of Poppy while we have been away to reassure us that Poppy is happy, relaxed and settled. This has meant the world to us knowing Poppy is happy and has enabled us to relax and enjoy our holiday. We would definitely recommend Pet stay and Pam and to anyone who is worried about leaving a much loved pet there is no need to worry with Pam looking after them!

Charlie & Alfie

“After a bad experience with another dog holiday company, we were cautious about using Pet Stay. I have to say after our initial meeting with Celia & John we were more than happy for Charlie and Alfie to stay with them both. We would like to thank Celia and John for looking after Charlie & Alfie so well while we were away on holiday.”

“Lola, our lovely Beagle stayed in a kennel during our last holiday and we were less than impressed when we picked her up. After this we decided to use a home boarding – which was the best decision we have made. Lola was matched to a lovely lady, Celia, who treated her like family, keeping her routine the same as we had at home. We received email updates and pictures on how Lola was doing which was very reassuring while we were away. We will definitely use this service again – everyone we spoke to was lovely and welcoming and we most importantly knew our pooch was well looked after while we were away. 5* service we would recommend to anyone needing to leave their dog.”

They gave us all a very warm welcome on our initial visit and Henry was instantly at ease with them and their two lovely dogs. “We would like to thank Celia and John for looking after our beau boy, from our initial meeting beau seemed content and relaxed in their home and company, we were a little worried because he is used to being mostly lead free, but seemed quite content when we arrived to take him home, in fact he jumped back out of the car back into their home. Celia and John are a lovely pairing as far as we are concerned. Thanks David, Nina and of course beau boy.”

We had a great holiday and it was helped by knowing that Stanley was being well cared for.

We are grateful to you for your help to find a loving home for Stan when our original plans fell apart at the last minute. It was a worrying time just before our holiday but as soon as we met Phil we had confidence in him. The environment was just perfect for Stan and I know that he loved playing and running with Phil’s lovely golden retriever, Meg. Phil had a very calm, friendly, common sense approach and Stan obviously liked him and enjoyed his stay. Thank you Lorraine and Phil for ensuring Stan was safe and happy whilst we were away. Jennie

“Looking for somewhere to send Bumble on holiday, we decided to contact PetStay who then put me in touch with Celia and John. Turned out to be a wonderful combination between them and Bumble. The whole process done in a very warm, efficient and relaxed manner both by Lorraine at Petstay and the meeting with Celia and John. Bumble, settling in with them very quickly and I got the impression he would have stayed with them when I got back to collect him if he could! All in all I was very impressed and happy with the whole stay and would be only too happy to send him there again. A very warm thank you to Celia and John for looking after him so well.”

Significantly more than kennels no doubt about it..A very positive first time stay for him so very reassuring for us. Thank you!”

“It was good to know Bramble was being looked after by Celia while we were on holiday. The care was excellent and Bramble even learnt how to jump into the back of the car (something we’ve been trying to teach him for a while). I didn’t worry at all while we were away as I was sent frequent snippets of his adventures. Thank you PetStay.”

“What a relief to find someone as lovely as Phillip to leave my dog Cassie with. He has a wonderful way with dogs and Cassie took to him immediately. Keo & Lola

“Lorraine was brilliant and professional from the beginning, the process of meeting our sitter right through to completing the booking was super easy. Our sitter Norma was absolutely lovely, I couldn’t have asked for a nicer person to look after our dogs Lola and Keo. We were a little nervous at first as many people have preconceived perceptions of Staffies but Norma had experience with the breed and they adored each other. Thank you so much Norma for loving them like they were your own. No doubt we will see you again even if it’s for a walk. ”

I was very impressed with the thoroughness and the assistance received to place my dog, a recently adopted elderly Staffie with arthritis. His foster home was splendid and Pamela took very good care of him. I would use the service again.

July 2016

I felt so much happier leaving my dog with a PetStay carer. Unlike another company I contacted I was able to meet the person who was going to be looking after my dog and this gave significant peace of mind.
My dog came home happy and healthy and that is the most important thing.

July 2016

‘Dex was very happy when we collected him on Sunday. We didn’t pause for breath yesterday but I plan to email Phil, his PetStay carer and say thank you again today. I was overwhelmed with relief when I saw Dex on Sunday! It’s the first time we’ve left him with anyone outside the family, so I was worried about him, with no need as it turned out! It was almost as hard as leaving one of my children when they were young but he had a lovely time with Phil and we plan to board him with him again. When Dex got home, he said hello to everyone and then zonked out and stayed like that the rest of the evening!’

Thank you for the great first time experience with PetStay. Ben enjoyed the whole holiday and we are very pleased with both carers updating us with messages and photos whilst we were away. It made us feel so much at ease and enjoyable knowing Ben is happy and well looked after. We are looking forwards to more holidays for Ben and have booked him in again already! Thank you

Jazzy, Gemma, Lizzy & Lulu

We were looking for someone to look after our 4 Chihuahua’s while my wife and I had our first holiday(60th birthday treat) without the dogs, We had visited a number of kennels and home boarders, they were not up to our high standards. Petstay offered a number of home boarders within our area and after visiting them we choose Tracey from Hereford .
Our 4 dogs can be a handful at times but Tracey looked after them perfectly taking them for daily walks and plenty of fuss. She updated us regularly by text to tell us how they are getting on.
When we got home after the holiday, we just dropped the suitcases off and rushed to picked up the dogs. Tracey opened her door and 4 very happy little dogs came forward, we sat down in the living room and our 4 dogs went and sat with Tracey(Lulu and Gemma sat on her lap)!!!!!
We could see that the dogs had been looked after very well. Thank you Tracey and “PetStay” for looking after our dogs.

Lottie & Roley

‘We just wanted to say thank you again for looking after Lottie and Roley so well whilst we were away. They were relaxed and happy and in good health on our return, a world apart from their last kennel experience. It was a relief to us to know that they had a nice time whilst we were away. Apologies to your poor dog who had the brunt of Roley’s affections. I’m sure he wasn’t disappointed to finally have peace in his own garden again. Have a lovely summer and thanks again!’

Meg & Tess

Having met Tracey at her home we were absolutely positive that she would be ideal to look after our two girls. What can I say? Tracey and her family were absolutely amazing!! The love, warmth, care and attention they gave our 2 girls was obvious. The girls were so happy, content and obviously enjoyed their time with Tracey, they had been so well looked after, fussed, cuddled and spoilt rotten.

Meet Our Carers

I have a rapidly growing team of carers across Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Monmouthshire. These wonderful carers have cosy dog friendly homes and lots of love to give to give your beloved 4 legged family members whilst you are away. However I still need more people to join my team. If you are at home during the day; have a secure garden; experienced dog owner and a genuine dog lover then please complete the carer enquiry form on the ‘contact us’ page or call Lorraine on 01684 296 274 or 07341 835 988 for an informal chat.

Here you can meet just a few of my amazing carers (there are many more) and see what they have to say about themselves and why they became PetStay carers:

“Hello, I’m Pam, and I grew up around Labradors. I have always loved dogs and so, when I lost my Greyhound/Whippet cross a few years ago, I couldn’t decide which breed to get next. But when I saw the to become a PetStay carer, I thought I would give it a try as it might help me decide. However I’m loving having all kinds of dogs to come and stay so much, and learning a great deal about the breeds, that I’m going to continue giving all my attention to my “guest” dogs. I get really excited when a new dog is coming to stay, but a little sad also when they leave, and always hope to see them again.”

Tess & Mike

Hello from Stoke Prior, Leominster. The picture is just of me and the boys as Mike is camera shy! I suspect that we are fairly typical PetStay carers, our children have all flown the nest and though we enjoy helping out with the grandchildren we have plenty of time to spare. I took early retirement from nursing and Mike is semi-retired, working from home. So we have the time and as dog lovers the inclination to open our home and hearts to doggy friends. Our ‘boys’ love everybody, people and dogs, and they really enjoy having furry friends for sleepovers. Prospective visitors come for a visit to check that all parties are happy and get along, Lorraine matches dogs to carers and is on hand every step of the way to support both ourselves and the doggie guests if needed. We have a lovely dog friendly garden of nearly an acre and we take pleasure in giving our visiting dogs a fun holiday, every day is a play day and they soon forget to be homesick!

Hello from The Malvern’s! Since my very early years up until a couple of years ago dogs have been a huge part of my life. From pure bred to cross breeds all have been a joy to own. Some were from puppy years while others rescued from situations certainly not of their choosing. As a family we have always looked for the best in every one of the dogs. Only just over 4 years ago sadly our bitch Bassett Hound, Cleo, herself a rescue who was almost 12 years old, passed away. Sadly, this happened just one month after moving into the area. Our male Bassett, Tully, did struggle after losing his companion. Only 6 months or so later, at the age of 13, he too passed away. Not feeling it was the right thing to replace our entertaining, much loved double act I then decided to become a volunteer dog walker for Cinnamon Trust. I have been doing this now for a couple of years. More recently, knowing that I was going to have much more time to devote to caring for dogs I decided earlier this year to become a home boarder. It matters to me that when any one of us is away our much loved family pets have a ‘home from home’ experience. I look forward to having the chance to keep them safe, fed and entertained during their own holiday experience. This would be nothing short of just what I too would need for any of my own dogs too. I relish the opportunity to meet all the family in order to make each and every pet feel ‘at home’ when you are away.
