PetStay Norfolk Branch

Hello my name is Sophia and I am very excited about welcoming you to PetStay Norfolk. Ever since watching James Herriot on the tv and reading all his books, I have wanted to be a vet. After graduating as a veterinary surgeon and working as a vet for a few years I started a family with my husband and found I couldn’t really combine being a vet with family life.

I started teaching Animal Management at the local college and achieved my teaching degree after 2 years. This was a great combination, I still had a job where I could take my dog to work (Seamus, on the picture, still loves coming to every lesson and the students love him) but when the children were off school, I was home as well.I was looking for a job where I could combine my love for dogs with my organisational skills and when I saw that PetStay Norfolk was available, I jumped at the chance to take it on.

Why home boarding?

Having fostered dogs for a few years, I know how dogs change when they are in kennels and how they improve when they come out of kennels into a loving family home. Having always had rescue dogs, I have never put any of them in kennels when I went on holiday, but at times it was hard to find alternatives. We usually book Seamus’ holiday before we book our own! Home boarding is the perfect solution to make sure that both dog(s) and owner are happy and at PetStay we make sure that all our carers are perfectly suited to the dog’s needs.

Why PetStay Norfolk? With PetStay Norfolk you can be assured that your dog will be in the most comfortable environment and well looked after by one of our carefully considered and handpicked carers. It is very important to me that I match your dog and the carer accordingly to ensure they are both right for each other. Most importantly I make sure that the carer can adapt to the dog’s daily routine, rather than the other way around. My carers are the most reliable and trustworthy in the area and meet stringent criteria in line with local council home boarding licence requirements, they are all insured and interviewed in their own homes.

What next?

So if you are looking for a caring holiday home for your four legged family member with people that adore dogs, are fully vetted, insured, licenced by the local council, are matched to the requirements of your dog and who will give them all their usual home comforts and routine whilst you are away, then phone me using the numbers below for a warm and friendly chat or write to me using the email address.

Before you then choose to book with PetStay, I will take great care to get to know you and your dog(s), taking full details of your dog(s) so that I can match them with the perfect carer. I will then arrange a ‘meet and greet’ for you, your dog and the carer in the carer’s home, with no obligation. After meeting the carer, and when you are completely happy with the match, I will organise the booking.

Sophia - PetStay Norfolk

We do get incredibly busy during school holidays and in the summer months so make sure you call us and arrange your dog care as soon as possible. I look forward to hearing from you and providing the very best home boarding that Norfolk has to offer.

Becoming a carer

Our service is proving so popular that we are always looking for new, dog-mad carers to join our brilliant team. If you’re interested in becoming a carer, I’d love to hear from you. You need to have experience looking after dogs, be at home during the day, have a secure garden, have no more than 2 dogs of your own and no children of 7 years or under. You can look forward to welcoming some delightful doggy guests into your home with the added bonus of earning a little extra.

Frequently Asked Questions about becoming a PetStay Carer

What are the requirements of becoming a carer?

You must be a genuine dog lover, have experience of looking after dogs and you need to be home during the day so you have plenty of time to give to the dogs you are caring for. You must have a secure garden and agree to abide by PetStay guidelines. You are allowed to have a dog of your own as long as your dog gets on with other dogs.

How are your carers vetted?

If you meet all the requirements listed above, we will come and visit you at your home. We will check the security of the garden, explain PetStay procedures and show you the guidelines each carer needs to follow. If you are happy with everything and we feel you would make a suitable PetStay carer, we would follow up a reference and arrange public liability insurance for you.

Do I need to be licensed?

If you are successful then you would apply to the council for a home boarding licence (if required by the local council), we can help you with this, it is a straight forward process.

How many dogs can I look after?

Our service is on a one-to-one basis, so only dogs from the same household will stay with you. You are allowed to take up to three dogs from the same household, BUT you choose what you are happy with. We will ask you how many dogs you would like to look after and what sized dog/s you would be happy to care for.

Do I have to provide the food?

No, the owner will bring any food or treats for the duration of the stay. Any toys, bedding, medication and leads will also be brought.

Does the dog/s have to be vaccinated?

Yes each dog MUST have up to date vaccinations, have been wormed and treated for fleas. Proof of the vaccinations will be brought to the meeting and shown to you.

What about walking the dogs?

All dogs should be taken out each day for walks. When you have your meeting with the owners all routines, including the number and length of walks, will be discussed. The dog is only ever walked on a lead.

What if the dog becomes ill?

We/you would endeavour to contact the owner or the emergency contact. The owner or the emergency contact would be liable for any expenses incurred in taking the dog to the vet.

How am I paid?

Your fee is paid as the dog is dropped off. This is a self-employed home-based position, is very flexible and fits around your lifestyle.

What happens next?

If you are interested in becoming a carer, please ring us for an informal chat and ask any questions or email us with your details and we will come back to you. You can also use the contact form on the ‘contact us’ tab. If we feel you are suitable we would then arrange to visit you at home.

Poppy

Poppy really enjoyed meeting Sophia and her 2 dogs a couple of times before her stay, and a visit to Sophia’s home. As owners we were very happy whilst away, knowing Poppy was safe and enjoying herself, and not lonely as she was on a previous kennel experience. We were sent lots of photos of Poppy whilst we were away too. On return Poppy greeted us warmly and Sophia reported back on her stay in detail before we returned home. We will use Pet Stay again in the near future and recommend Pet Stay to all dog owners.

Millie

Sorry this is so late, but I just wanted to say a massive thank you for arranging Millie’s stay with Jane in August. Millie had a brilliant weekend with Jane and sulked for a day when she came home! We are delighted to have found someone so caring to look after Millie. As my family live in Ireland we visit several times during the year and I will definitely be in contact with you in the future to arrange Millie’s care. The service you provide is fantastic.

Please pass on a huge thank you to Jane.

Norfolk-Pixie

Pixie

I’d just like to say that Adrian and Christine at Long Stratton took great care of our rescue dog Pixie. She was so calm and well behaved when we collected her after 17 days. She was in rescue kennels for 7 months before we found her so we didn’t want her to go through that again.

I would recommend Adrian and Christine as carers and will use Petstay again without doubt.

Thank you Sophia.

Kerry and her family welcomed Badger into their home, where she had excellent care. Kerry kept us informed by sending us pictures and texts, although we did not ask for these.
We felt very confident that she would be looked after well in our absence.

Bertie & Benji

‘We were apprehensive about leaving our dogs with carers as one them was just a year and half old, with no experience of being away from us. The older dog had bad arthritis so had exercise restrictions and a regime of medication. We shouldn’t have worried. The boys were so chilled out when we came to collect them nearly a week later. They were never left alone and were included in their carers’ living area, even on the couch. Not only did they eat well and exercised well with walks, chasing birds and playing football, but obviously LOVED as well. We couldn’t look after them any better.
As a result, we will be booking them in for more holiday time with their carers, and have no hesitation about recommending this site to any dog owners who love their pets like a family member.’

Poppy

We left our 5 month old puppy ‘Poppy’ with Kerry for three very happy days. It was Poppy’s first overnight holiday away from us and we were naturally worried but had absolutely no need to be. Poppy was the only dog in the house and was treated as one of the family- she enjoyed a trip to the beach, lovely walks and visits to the park. From start to finish Kerry was only concerned that Poppy would enjoy her stay and be well looked after- we were left in no doubt that Kerry and her family would look after Poppy as if she were their own. I received updates on how Poppy was doing during her stay. We will use Kerry again in the future without hesitation.

I’m happy to review our experience of Petstay. “Our dog had a lovely time with his carers, Margaret and Kevin. They have lots of experience with dogs and knew how to help him settle. He seemed very happy and relaxed when we picked him up. Margaret sent me some photos whilst we were away so I could keep up to date with his antics! They were very considerate and happy to follow our dog’s normal routine. Booking through Petstay was easy and it was very reassuring to know that carers are licensed and insured. I would definitely use this service again. 5 stars!”

Tara

Our beloved Jack Russell Tara stayed with Delna in Norfolk for a few days at the end of May. The situation was perfect for Tara who is blind. With a lovely house and garden to play in she soon made herself at home.
The attention she received from the carer couldn’t have been better and she was still the same happy little dog when we picked her up as she was when we left her.
We wouldn’t hesitate to use Petstay again, the service was excellent from the franchisee and they communicated promptly to any queries I had.

Max & Ruby

I was extremely worried & nervous about leaving my beloved fur babies, Max & Ruby, in kennels while we were on holiday. I looked at so many on the internet but couldn’t bear the thought of them in a ‘concrete cell’. Luckily I came across Petstay. It sounded perfect & would stop me worrying on my holidays. The booking process was easy, yet personal.

My dogs got to stay with Jessica. We went for a visit beforehand & they seemed right at home instantly. Jessica kindly agreed to send me photos & updates regularly. They looked like they were having the best time, I was worried they wouldn’t want to come home.

I cannot fault the service at all. I highly recommend Pet stay & will definitely use them again.

My husband was going into hospital and it was necessary to look for care for our very spoilt and valued dogs. I found Petstay on the internet and from the time I contacted them I was impressed by their professionalism. Immediately I felt I had found the right company. At our introduction to our dog carers we were both immediately reassured that our dogs would be well looked after. Molly and Dave stayed with Margaret and Kevin for 4 nights where they were spoilt and cared for as if they were at home. I cannot praise them enough for the care they have to the dogs and the support they gave to me following my husband’s operation and feel I have made good friends. If you like us and reluctant to put your dogs in Kennels then this is the right service for you. Thank you PetStay

Augie

Augie

We have an 18 Month Italian Spinone called Augie. He’s a gentle giant and a bit of a handful. We had a couple of holidays planned and I wanted to find a caring home environment which would suit his character as he is a very sociable dog and likes to be around people and other animals. Spencer and his family and their dog Oreo were absolutely wonderful. He did a short stay at first to see how it would go. Spencer and family couldn’t do enough for him. They followed the daily routine he has already for walking, feeding and sleeping and he was so content when I picked him up I don’t think he wanted to come home! He then did a second longer stay and I was so impressed by the outcome of the first visit I knew I didn’t have to worry at all and I was right. For me and Augie, Pet stay has just the right balance of professionalism within a caring family environment and I fully recommend Spencer at Petstay to anyone.

Vanessa & Chris Bandy, Norwich

Please meet some of our PetStay carers:

Norfolk-Adrian and Christine

Adrian & Christine

Adrian and Christine live in a bungalow in a rural village with lovely dog walking areas nearby. They are semi-retired and have their hours sorted in such a way that one of them is always at home so the boarding dogs will never have to be left on their own. This is what they say about being part of the team of PetStay Norfolk carers.

‘My name is Christine and I have been looking after animals, mainly dogs, for the past twenty years. Recently my husband, Adrian, has joined me, and together we have experienced the joy of caring for other people’s dogs, and sometimes cats, especially after our own lovely dog passed away nine years ago.

We decided not to have another pet of our own but to continue looking after other peoples dogs whilst they were away. Recently we saw an advert for Pet Stay and decided to give it a go, and we have really enjoyed the experience.

Our aim is to ensure the dogs that stay with us are well cared for and enjoy a Home from Home experience so that when they return home they are relaxed and stress free.’

Norfolk-Kerry

Kerry

Kerry is a hair dresser and works from home, she lives in a semi-detached house in a lovely green village near Norwich with some really nice walking areas close by. Kerry lives with her husband and 8-year-old son. She is used to both large dogs and small ones.

‘I have grown up with dogs all my life until I lost my last dog 3 years ago, so thought that being a carer would be a lovely way to get my doggy fix without the heartache. I missed my walks and having a dog around the house also my 8 year old boy loves it too. I have looked after some lovely dogs so far and look forward to many more.’

Norfolk-Tanya

Tanya & Lee

Tanya and Lee both work in education, their grown-up daughters and their partners also live at home and also work in education so they are only available during school holidays. Any dog would be thrilled however as it will have adult company all the time and will be thoroughly spoiled. They live in a lovely area with plenty of walks. This is what they said after their first guest and here is Tanya pictured with some other guests ‘Happy and Ani’.

‘We have just recently joined PetStay as we love having dogs around the house. We have had two Cairn Terriers, Buster who was 14 when he passed away & Sparky who was 11 when he passed away.

We both work full time & felt it wasn’t fair to a new puppy. When I saw PetStay on Facebook I felt this would be the perfect opportunity for us to have another dog / dogs during the school holidays.

We have thoroughly enjoyed having our first little visitor Harry. He has settled in really well, giving his owner a well-deserved holiday knowing her little man is in very safe hands.

We have had some lovely walks & he has enjoyed trying all the beds out!!
Looking forward to our next little visitors.
Tanya & Lee’

Norfolk-Margaret & Kevin

Margaret & Kevin

The lovely Margaret and Kevin. Pictured here with 2 of their guests, Maisie and Jen. They live in a detached bungalow on the edge of a village with a lovely large garden. This is what they say about being carers for PetStay Norfolk:

“Kevin and I have had dogs all our married life, usually rescue ones! When our last little dog Monty, a jack Russell x Lakeland terrier, passed away, at the grand age of 17 years, we were devastated. We decided that we wouldn’t have another dog as we were both past retirement age and were afraid another dog would outlive us, plus the fact that losing all our dogs has been so painful each time.
When we saw the advertisement for PetStay it seemed that was a perfect way to get our “doggy fix” without the long term commitment of owning another dog, it has been brilliant, we have met some wonderful people and wonderful dogs! We have repeat bookings so we get to see them on a regular basis which is very rewarding, if you are thinking about joining PetStay, they will give you all the support and information needed.”

Norfolk-Gerri & Mike

Gerri & Mike

Pictured here with one of my dogs, Mary, you see the lovely Gerri and Mike. They have been carers for PetStay Norfolk from the start. Gerri and Mike live in a detached house in a rural setting with a lovely large garden. They are very popular carers, with quite a few repeating customers and get booked up very quickly. They say this about being carers:

“We are carers for PetStay Norfolk and love doing it, making a fuss of the dogs and stroking them is very therapeutic.

Dogs just makes us smile more & feel happy, the nice people we meet who bring their dogs to us, are lovely. Also it’s such good exercise, dog walking. It’s amazing how many people we have met on our walks. Now we have retired it’s such a great thing to do.”

Sandra & Garry

Sandra & Garry

Please meet Sandra and Garry.

They live in a lovely house with a small but very secure walled-in garden in a lovely green area. Sandra and Garry are very dedicated to animals and used to medicating animals, having had/still owning cats with diabetes, Roscoe with only 3 legs. The two cats they still own are very chilled and used to dogs and Roscoe and Millie are very friendly and sweet. This is what Sandra and Garry say about being a carer for PetStay Norfolk:

Hi, we’re Garry and Sandra. We live in Attleborough with our two Bichons, Roscoe who is 5 and Millie, 2 and a half. We wouldn’t like to put our two into kennels when we go away and thought there must be many more people like us, so when we saw the opportunity to board dogs we thought this is something we would enjoy doing. So we signed up. We are at home all day and have plenty of time to give to your fur babies. We look forward to meeting you

Norfolk-Angeline & Stephen

Angeline & Stephen

Please meet another new set of carers, Angelina and Stephen with the lovely Sherlock:

“We are Angeline and Stephen. We have a bichon frise called Sherlock. I am retired and Stephen works for the NHS as a support worker. Sherlock is 2.5 years old. He is playful and loves playing with his doggy pals. We live in a bungalow in a quiet estate in Sprowston, Norwich. Nearby we have Mousehold Heath, a very popular woods for dog walkers and an enclosed recreational park all within walking distance.”

Norfolk-Julie

Julie

Julie is also one of our more recent recruits. She lives in a terraced house with a typical lovely deep ‘terraced house garden’. She loves all dogs, from small to very big dog and has had experience with all of them.

“Hi my name is Julie and I have just joined Pet stay. I live in Dereham for several years after returning from the USA. I have had several dogs in the past and I have volunteered and worked in an animal shelter. I love dogs and am looking forward to looking after other people’s dogs.”

News

Hello to all our customers, their four legged friends and the brilliant carers

The summer is well and truly over and what a wonderful summer it has been. Our team of carers has grown to a healthy 11 carers! We lost Ann-Marie as a carer over the summer which was a real shame as she was a brilliant carer. We gained and lost Karen and John which was also sad but Jasmine, their own pooch, really didn’t enjoy all the dogs and it does need to be enjoyable for all involved. The team of lovely carers now exists of the following:
Gerri and Mike in Lower Southrepps who have been with PetStay from the start,
Margaret and Kevin in Horsford who have also been with PetStay from the start,
Jane in Wymondham, who is our only ‘weekend only’ carer,
Sarah in Sprowston who owns a lovely calm Labrador,
Hilda, Sarah’s mum, who lives on her own, also in Sprowston,Norfolk-All about dogs 2
Tanya and Lee in Hevingam who, due to working in education can’t have a dog of their own and so care for dogs in the school holidays,
Sandra and Garry in Attleborough, who own two lovely little Bichon’s and 2 very calm cats,
Julie, who lives in Dereham and used to work with rescue dogs in the USA,
Angeline and Stephen, also from Sprowston and supported in their caring duties by Sherlock their Bichon,
Kerry in Taverham doesn’t own a dog but is very used to the larger variety as she used to own a Pyrenean mountain dog,
and last but definitely not least, Adrian and Christine from Long Stratton, who are semi-retired and very experienced dog lovers. They currently don’t own a dog of their own. Please visit the ‘meet the carers’ section on the website to meet some of the above carers.

We went to the All About Dogs show where we met lots and lots of lovely dogs and their owners. Some existing customers with their dogs and lots of potentially new customers and their dogs. We also had quite a bit of interest of people wanting to become one of our carers, even some people from the King’s Lyn area in which we desperately still need carers! Fingers crossed!

I participated in a Dog First Aid course as it is always good to update your knowledge and I am hoping to set up a first aid session for all our carers and wanted to ensure I was giving them the most up to date information. I am hoping to set that up soon.
I have really enjoyed the first (nearly) 6 months of running PetStay Norfolk, have met some wonderful people and dogs and certainly hope to continue doing so for many years to come. It is great to read the reviews our customers write (see the ‘reviews’ section on the webpage) about their dogs’ stay with our carers.
The Facebook page is also up and running, I am enjoying the interaction that takes place. Especially the ‘guess the breed’ posts appear to be getting a lot of reactions 😊
Currently we are already taking bookings for next summer so please book early to avoid disappointment especially if you want a particular carer!

News

Hello to all our customers, their four legged friends and the brilliant carers

It has been a busy few weeks. I took over the franchise at the end of March, we are now about 2 months later and things are going well. We have had lots of regular customers booking their lovely dogs in with their ‘own’ carer, but also new customers who, initially nervously, met with the carers that we picked for them and after realizing that their dogs would be very well cared for and even pampered while they went away, left the dogs in the carers’ capable hands.
We have been so busy that it was clear I needed to actively look for more carers and so I did. Several adverts on Facebook, leaflets in shops, vets, dog walking areas, an advert in the WI Gazette and signage on my van (see pictures) have already been very effective.

Norfolk-News

We have welcomed several more carers in our team: Sarah (Thorpe St Andrews), Hilda (Sprowston), Sandra and Garry (Attleborough) and Ann-Marie (Great Yarmouth). Two more sets of carers (Hevingham and Spixworth) are currently waiting for their licences and once they are approved they will be raring to go as well.
I am still interviewing carers at the moment so, watch this space, there will be new additions soon, I’m sure. If you are interested, or you know someone who might be interested in becoming one of our carers, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
We will soon add a ‘meet the carers’ section to our site so please do visit again soon.

Kind regards,
Sophia Guymer MRCVS with SeamusNorfolk-Sophia
